Description
The Wrigley Company started selling scouring soap with gum as a premium in 1891, but the gum sold better than the soap. The company debuted their Spearmint and Juicy Fruit brands in 1893 and Doublemint became their third product in 1914. The “Doublemint Twins” first sang and danced for chewers in 1939 and continued into the twenty-first century as one of the longest advert campaigns in history. The Chicago-based Wrigley’s first introduced its “Plen-T-Pak” in the early 1970s as chicle and sugar prices forced its nickel package to seven cents in 1971. The larger packages, which sold for 20 cents or more, weren’t cheaper per stick but made it look like chewers were getting a better deal.
This rack is designed to either clip or screw on to an existing Wrigley’s gum or other kind of candy rack, to hold the larger packages. That probably dates it to the early 1970s before the company had a chance to introduce new, larger racks to hold all of their brands.
The rack measures 19 x 6 inches and the metal strip on the front is about 1.5 inches wide (48 x 15 x 4 cms). The rack has slight scratching but still has excellent paint and the pink-colored wire is an added eye catcher. A must have for a retro country or general store or a candy or soda fountain. These old gum displays are getting harder and harder to find in good condition. Add this one to your collection today.
